Bole Cut Lumber |
|
The main trunk of a tree is called the bole. When a tree is milled in parallel slabs it is often called bole cut or sometimes flitch cut lumber. Milling a tree in this manner yields the widest planks (through the heart), and the greatest amount of matched lumber. Each plank is a bookmatch to its immediate neighbor, and grain character, color and pattern is consistent in sequential planks. Wood sawn in this manner is either stored in sequence or marked on the end of each plank so that the matched planks can be easily found. Furniture composed of mated material is unified to a degree unobtainable with other methods, without having to disguise the subtle colors and textures of the wood with stain.
